HCM Artist Spotlight Interview With Music Producer Antwon La Great

Today HCM is going to end the week with an exclusive interview with Antwon La Great, an aspiring music producer who’s on a path to greatness. Antwon briefly talked about how he began his journey and what can be expected from him in the near future. Check out his interview for more details…

HCM. How did you come by your stage name?
Antwon La Great. When I was a kid I got called Antwon because of that Denzel Washington movie that came out Antwon Fisher. Later on when I started producing music and needed to decide on a name so I mixed Antwon with the historical figure Alexander the great and put my own twist on it.

HCM. When did you discover your love for music and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?
Antwon La Great. It was around the summer of 8th grade going into freshmen year of high school and a friend of mine started getting into producing so I tried it out and immediately knew this was something special. I realized that I wanted to pursue a career in music was when it was the only thing on my mind 24/7. For some people, it’s something they like to do for fun or maybe because it’s a trendy thing to do for social media but for me, it’s really my life.

HCM. To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
Antwon La Great. My two biggest influencers when it comes to production would be Dr. Dre and Kanye West. I grew up listening to all of their albums and are the two best producers we’ve ever had in hip hop music. Yet when I work on my own music I don’t try and emulate them because you’ll never be a legend without your own style.

HCM. On your upcoming album… How did you come up with the concept for this project?
Antwon La Great. I was listening to Donuts by J Dilla heavy during a period when I didn’t have any upcoming releases and was inspired by the fact that this instrumental album spoke to me in a way without actually having any actual rappers or verses on any of the songs. When I was in my old studio one night listening to Welcome To The Show off donuts I looked up at a poster I had of the Stanley Kubrick movie A Clockwork Orange and the idea came to me then “A Clockwork MPC” my own instrumental album. I then began the process of moving over from iOS production on iPad over to Logic Pro X on Mac. Digging through vinyl for samples, movies, and reflecting on what I wanted this project to really be.

HCM. What are some of your greatest challenges as an artist, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
Antwon La Great. Getting out of your own way in terms of actually putting out music. You could have hard drives of really good music but if the world never hears it then what did you really make it for? The greatest attribute in terms of work ethic would be, I have a strong drive for success and doing whatever it takes to manifest that into a reality. When my music days are past me and I have years of albums and songs behind me I’d like to look at it all as something influential and inspiring to others like me. So one day someone in my same shoes can do the same.

HCM. What are your plans for the near future?
Antwon La Great. I have a few more releases coming up this year, one of them being “Restless 2: End Of The Night” a follow up to my first EP I dropped in 2019 which brings an end to one of my first series. Also becoming more active on social media and developing a presence and relationship with my fans.

HCM. Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
Antwon La Great. My family for being supportive of my decision, all my day one a1’s, and the RZA for putting me on meditation after reading The Wu-Tang Manual.
