Darrell Kelley Interview

Darrell Kelley is the epitome of a renaissance man. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, he relocated to the great state of Georgia and immediately got to work nourishing the hearts and minds of the people in his community. As a social leader, Kelley speaks openly about key issues such as racism, injustice, and inequality, and uses his musical talent to share a message of hope and love, calling people out for dialogue and action.

His new album “The Audacity” is a brave yet encouraging statement about the challenges we are facing in the year 2020 and their intrinsic opportunities for a brighter future. Darrell Kelley is a musician, author, and entrepreneur, and has shared his thoughts with Hood Critic Magazine this week.

HCM. How did you come by your stage name?
Darrell Kelley. It’s is my birth name, a gift from my mother Sandra Kelley.

HCM. When did you discover your love for music and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?
Darrell Kelley. My family was always in the music industry and since I was 03 years I was driven to this path. After becoming a successful entrepreneur, I decided that it was time to pursue this dream and in 2018 I released my debut album, Unity.

HCM. To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
Darrell Kelley. I’m influenced by R&B music, pop, gospel, but I always wanted to create my own style, something eclectic that nobody’s heard before.

HCM. On your current/upcoming album… How did you come up with the concept for this project?
Darrell Kelley. By watching all of the rhetoric on the news, especially in 2020. It has been a challenging year for a lot of Americans, especially for the black community. I’m touched by the pain of every family, and the stories of those victims need to be heard.

HCM. What are some of your greatest challenges as an artist, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
Darrell Kelley. Even when you have the financial resources to invest in your music career, the greatest challenge is to finding the right outlets to put your music, the distribution and communication need to be constant and innovative. I’ve been fortunate to always feel confident and find my way through. I give credit to my PR team too.

HCM. What impression would you like listeners to be left with after hearing your music?
Darrell Kelley. I want them to reflect on how important each individual is to create unity in our beloved country and overall love in the world, regardless of one’s ethnicity or political preference.

HCM. What are your plans for the near future?
Darrell Kelley. I hope we can start the national tour in the beginning of 2021, and I will definitely be writing more music and spreading the words love, unity and acceptance.

HCM. Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
Darrell Kelley. I always appreciate the support of my family, friends, and supporters. I’m blessed with a wonderful team, my PR and promotion companies, and certainly, I want to thank Hood Critic Magazine for this opportunity.
