Trunxks Beatz Interview

HCM. How did you come by your stage name?
Trunxks Beatz. My real name is Truong and growing up people couldn’t pronounce it well so they use to call me Trunks in the neighborhood. When I decided to make music professionally I ended up going with that nickname and added the X as the x-factor.

HCM. When did you discover your love for music and what made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?
Trunxks Beatz. I grew up on music of all sorts from my mom exposing me to the Whitney’s and Mariah’s to my Uncles exposing me to NWA, Eminem, Tupac. I knew I wanted to pursue music when I heard 50 Cents “Get Rich Or Die Tryin” album. Sonically, I thought it was a masterpiece and wanted to create something like that for my own resume.

HCM. To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
Trunxks Beatz. Being from the west coast and growing up in Southern California, my sound is heavily influenced by Dr. Dre. There would be no Trunxks without Dr. Dre. The strings, piano, drums. I just infuse mine with a bit more dark classical cinematic tone but the Dre influence is heavy for sure.

HCM. On your current/upcoming album… How did you come up with the concept for this project?
Trunxks Beatz. My compilation project “Defiant” conceptually arose from me wanting to work with so many artists. I had connected to so many amazing artists through contests that I ran with KOTB that I decided why not get a compilation album going.

HCM. What are some of your greatest challenges as a producer, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
Trunxks Beatz. Some of the challenges I face is trying to keep my current fans happy with the music while at the same time exploring new styles sonically. My greatest attribute is I’m a workaholic, but I don’t really see it as work. I truly enjoy making music daily and actually do make something every single day. I don’t have many hobbies so this is all I do 24/7.

HCM. What impression would you like listeners to be left with after hearing your music?
Trunxks Beatz. Remember when Vince Carter stuck his whole arm into the hoop at the 2000 NBA dunk contest. All the fans were silent, the whole arena silent. I want that reaction. I want people to be that impressed. Something out of the ordinary.

HCM. Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
Trunxks Beatz. The Lord Almighty, wouldn’t be here without him blessing me with my gifts. My family for holding me down. My friends for keeping it 100 with me. And last but not least, my supporters, fans, and clients for believing in my sound.
