Today Hood Critic Magazine interviewed up and coming Canadian pop singer/song writer Sofia Evangelina. Sofia has been involved with music since the tender age of 5 and hasn’t looked back since. Sofia seemingly tailors her sense of style from some of the most notable names in the industry, ranging from the late Whitney Houston to Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Lisa Fischer and more. HCM. How did you come by your stage name?
Sofia Evangelina. Evangelina was my middle name, adopted to my last/artist name! 🙂
HCM. When did you discover your love for music and what made you realize you wanted to pursuit a career in music?
Sofia Evangelina. I’ve been a performer of all sorts and absolutely in love with music since I can remember life’s beginning. I remember being 5 and being so utterly moved by music – literally! (I danced to everything, that had a rhythm and a beat!) that one day, I needed to let my momma know my feelings, so for the silliest lack of better vocabulary at age 5 I told her “music paralyzes me”. And I’ve felt the same, if not more ever since with my passion growing every single day.
HCM. To what or whom do you accredit your sense of style?
Sofia Evangelina. I really love pop, but my truest inspiration comes from RnB and soul and gospel and even some good old Motown. I look up to music’s truest, classic divas like Etta James, Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin and my new day powerhouse queens like Christina Aguilera, Beyonce, Mariah Carrey and more. “Honey, those girls know how to sing”! Ever since I was very little I knew that I wanted to have a voice of power and essence to tell my stories and a huge range, to express myself and all that I am. Because that is just the kinda girl I am! Most of all it excites me to interweave all these powerful elements into ever-changing and evolving pop, some like to call me a PPP (Powerhouse Pop Princess!)
HCM. On your current album… How did you come up with the concept for this project?
Sofia Evangelina. Butterfly, is my very first album, a cover album consisting of 10 songs. The album was meant to showcase my voice at the time, taking upon various songs and styles and where I have the potential to go and most of all represent the burst from my cocoon and first flutters into the world, like a butterfly!
“This Is Your Song”, is my very first original debut single ever to be released to the world. It has dropped worldwide TODAY November 16th, simultaneously with the official music video. I couldn’t be more excited to share a song that means so much to me, a song dedicated to my fellow youth to ignite their inner power to surpass their times of trials and hardship, live life on their terms and chase their dreams becoming the future of the world.
HCM. What are some of your greatest challenges as an artist, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
Sofia Evangelina. So far, it’s hard to think of many challenges because life is so exciting and I love each and every minute of it! There is so so so much to learn, and it’s so important for me to be a dedicated hard worker and become like a sponge, absorb everything I see and touch, learn how to do things, work to master, and then do it 11 times better tomorrow. I know that every challenge I face is beautiful and fun, sort of like a video game! Because I know they will make me stronger in every way, and more perseverant and experienced. Lastly, the biggest challenge for me at the moment is definitely obscurity, but it won’t be for long, working on it! 😜
HCM. What impression would you like listeners to be left with after hearing your music?
Sofia Evangelina. I want my listeners to be left feeling empowered and excited to go and ya’ know! Go share their essence with the world! Most of all, I want them to feel very connected to me and my message, no matter the song or context.
HCM. What are your plans for the near future?
Sofia Evangelina. Eeeh! There is so much coming, I cannot wait, but most of all I must announce my ambassadorship on board the PSA School tour, spanning throughout the entirety the United States and soon branching throughout all of North America, the UK and furthermore.
I’m beyond honored and to be one of 16 artist ambassadors touring aboard The PSA School Tour, dedicated to evoking social change amongst the youth of today fighting against bullying and the major extreme detriments and hardships that kids are facing today and most of all the empowerment and uniting of the youth around the world.
HCM. Is there anyone you’d like to thank, any shout outs?
Sofia Evangelina. I want to thank my mama bear, Milla. She is my super mom with a glittering cape, she’s the best mom any girl could dream of in the whole world and my best friend. She is my hero and inspires me every day all while teaching me everything that I know. I love her so much. I’m very grateful to be able to work with my super talented producer and collaborator Bryant Olender.
I want to thank my papa for all his love and selfless hard work to make my dreams a reality. I want to thank my sweet manager Vinny (Genie), his belief in me is so special and I’m very grateful and excited for all that is to come with our new powerful forming team. I want to thank my family and beautiful friends for their support and belief in me and all of my first fans and supporters.
