HCM Spotlight Interview with J Davon Harris

Hailing from the birth state of hip-hop comes a budding artist whose work ethic speaks for itself, J Davon Harris is no stranger to the craft. HCM had the pleasure of interviewing J Davon, giving us some insight into what he’s been working on, as well as his early beginnings. Take a look below to learn more about J Davon Harris and his grind toward his hip-hop legacy.

J Davon Harris Interview

HCM. Where are you from and how did you get to this point in your career as an artist?
J Davon Harris. I’m originally from Albany, NY but I attended college in Charlotte, NC, and now reside in Northern Virginia.

I got to this point by staying the course, putting in the work, and not becoming discouraged.

HCM. When did you know that you were going to make music a career?
J Davon Harris. I feel like I always knew, I had early exposure to music in my household. I grew up as a participant in hip-hop culture.

HCM. On your current/upcoming album… How did you come up with the concept for this project?
J Davon Harris. I’m still conceptualizing the project, but since late September I’ve released a single every Friday. I won’t say it’s a sample of the project but it gives insight into where I’m taking it and what my audience can expect.

HCM. What are some of your greatest challenges as an artist, and what is your greatest attribute when it comes to your work ethic?
J Davon Harris. Reach. I love that there is so much music out, but the challenge is breaking through to carve out an audience, and then keeping them engaged. It’s a challenge I’m up to though, the grind never stops.

HCM. What do you think your “biggest break” or “greatest opportunity” has been so far in your musical career?
J Davon Harris. Working with Ski Beatz. He’s a part of an iconic hip-hop album (Jay-Z Reasonable Doubt) in addition to his work with the likes of Camp Lo, Curren$y, Smoke Dza, Jay Electronica, etc. And now I’m on that list too.

HCM. How do you see your sound evolving in the next couple of years?
J Davon Harris. I think my sound will continue to evolve in terms of content, topic, etc. My producers always push the needle on sound which adds to the definition of what ” J Davon Harris” music sounds like.

HCM. What impression would you like listeners to be left with after hearing your music?
J Davon Harris. That they want to hear more, or what they’ve heard again. I want it to be a lasting impression.
