Just this past week we sat down with southern hip-hop artist Mr. Hympdok for an interview. Here’s what the MC had to say…
HCM. Tell us about where you’re from and how you got to this position today.
Mr. Hympdok. I’m Mr. HympDok, aka, your Phunk Musik Pharmacist, aka Smokey Davis Jr. Shabong!!!, aka Dok Lou The M.C. born at Ft. Jackson S.C., and was raised in Bossier City, Shreveport area. I’ve been forever consumed with this energy wave known as Hip Hop since as early as 1985. I’ve gathered influences for my music from ALL coast, and of course the Reggae influence is there as well.
HCM. How did you come by the name “Mr. Hympdok”?
Mr. Hympdok. It’s really the short version of saying Honesty Yields Prescription Doses Of Knowledge. It’s also my call sign for all the internet gaming, and it’s the way I make sense of my life journey, and where this wave is gonna take me into the future.
HCM. What is the music scene like in your area?
Mr. Hympdok. What a lot of people miss out on about my area is that there’s music here for whatever taste you have for it. Now, we’re known for the Ratchet Movement and there is a heavy following for that. We just have to take the responsibility as Artist and get out there and give it to them no matter the circumstances. The more we show up and show out, the more people will respond to YOUR brand of music.
HCM. Tell us about your latest album “Stash Box”.
Mr. Hympdok. Stash Box is a collaboration of music that I’ve recorded with some talented artist in the area. Plus , there is some Mr. HympDok unreleased nuggets on there as well…..I don’t know yet if that’s gonna be a series yet. I’ll steam some vegetables and marinate on it a bit.
HCM. What does this project mean to you?
Mr. Hympdok. It is the rebirth of Mr. HympDok. The genesis of this cool, In your face with a reggae twist, and I decided to bring some friends along for the journey. My Marvelous Starz label mates did an excellent job on it. I’m very proud of the them, and how the project came out.
HCM. What are your plans for the future? Any tours or shows?
Mr. Hympdok. I plan on hitting the streets, the alley ways, the hangouts, the festivals, the open mic’s, any and everywhere I can so that everyone can experience what Mr. HympDok has to offer your ears , your brain, and your soul!! So be on the look out for your boy-boy in your area…LIGHTERS UP!!!!!
HCM. What are you currently working on and how can the people find you?
Mr. Hympdok. I am currently working on the Token Werdz album with incredible production by Epik Tha Dawn. Be on the look out for the first single VooDoo coming on Friday October 13th!! There is also a side project I’m experimenting with putting this Smokey Davis Jr. Sauce sound to some funky Neo Soul grooves by SoFo Real Productions called Wonderful Flowers, but we’ll get back to that.
