La Chat – Murder She Spoke II

To even have as many female rappers in the hip hop game these days is definitely a step in the right direction and when it comes to one of Memphis’ most well known female MCs, the road to recognition and respect is one that is well deserved.

Since her debut album dropped nearly fifteen years ago, Memphis female hip hop artist La Chat has been a constant presence on the local and independent nationwide scene. Known as the female counterpart to the revered Three Six Mafia, her first album, Murder She Spoke, debuted on the Hypnotize Minds label and quickly made an impact in a major way. Staying true to her roots, the street, and her core audience, La Chat proved that a woman could enter a male-dominated world, break the mold, and then re-fashion it to fit her own agenda. And this year, she released Murder She Spoke II to prove that when it comes to keeping a presence in a far different era in hip hop than when she still entered, she still has the goods to deliver.

With a competent production team working behind the scenes (DJ Zirk, Big Boi, DJ Squeeky) and guest rappers on several tracks (Lil Wyte, Frayser Boy, Miscellaneous), La Chat has a firm footing to spit her lyrics and exert her prowess as an experienced artist.

As a hardcore rapper, La Chat pulls no punches, delivers lyrics that are straight, no chaser, and dares a male MC to spit as fiercely as she does. Those that contend her mouth is too dirty obviously have not lived on the streets of Memphis and La Chat is the truth that will set the streets free. Her street cred is unquestioned and her swagger over the beats are undeniable. On the track ‘You a Sanga’, La Chat toys around with the notion of mafia ties and on “Motivation’, speakers are put to the test in a major way.

Perseverance is the name of the game when it comes to a career in hip hop and La Chat has done what few MCs – male or female – has managed to do: stay in the game, stay relevant, and maintain a rapport with their core audience. Murder She Spoke II unabashedly sets La Chat apart as that ghetto bitch that demands your respect. Welcome to the world of La Chat, one that is as lewd and as loud as she wants it to be.

Discretion advised.
